August 16th – Wilts Div 1: Burbage & ER v Calne

Cricket match commentaryPosted by Roger Barker Sun, August 17, 2008 18:59:36
After missing the last two matches thanks to Global Warming and the resultant high rainfall we are suffering, both clubs were glad to be finally getting another game. Calne won the toss and inserted BERCC on a damp wicket more reminiscent of April than August.

Burbage made slow but steady progress getting to 48 for 2 after 23 overs. David Cope then entered the fray and immediately timed the ball, scoring an aggressive 68 in quick time with 5 sixes (losing two balls). However once David was fifth out with the score on 134 BERCC managed to subside to 139 all out - Chris Downham being the main beneficiary taking 4-14 off 6 overs, Dan Knight took 2-9 and Luke Edwards 2-25.

Special mention should go to 11 year old Oliver Lavis who came into the game on Saturday morning when Pete Amor went lame overnight, Jerry Kunkler not wanting to disrupt the 2nd team playing high flying Trowbridge in Division 4 - BERCC won by 4 wickets, with Oliver's elder brother James taking 4-27. Oliver faced 3 balls without flinching and was let down by his partner's running!!

When Calne batted after tea, BERCC started well with Nic Cook dismissing both Calne openers in his first two overs to leave them at 5-2. Charlie Moss then strode to the wicket and rode his luck against Cook - who regularly beat the bat but just kept missing the stumps, ending with 2-22 from 8 overs. However all the other bowlers BERCC tried couldn't find their rhythm and Moss smote them to all parts of the field, winning the match with a six taking him to 96 not out, an excellent destructive innings.

With two rounds of matches left, Calne are deservedly certain to win promotion to the Wiltshire Premier League next season. They also are set to emulate Potterne who last season won promotion by winning every league match they played. We wish them every success next season.

July 26th – Wilts Div 1: Burbage & ER v Spye Park

Cricket match commentaryPosted by Roger Barker Fri, August 01, 2008 11:00:54

On a hot day BERCC won the toss and decided to field. Spye Park got of to a solid start putting on 96 for the first wicket which fell in the 26th over. Once both openers fell Dave Beal for 45 and Paul Fennel for 43, both removed by Ash Rosier, BERCC bowled tightly and fielded well. Nic Cook came back for an excellent second spell to capture 7 wickets in his last 4 overs, six of which were bowled and included a hat-trick. Spye being all out to the last ball of the innings for 170 which looked a below par score on the wicket.

BERCC also had a steady start with Peter Street and Jit Bhannerjee (46) putting on 49 for the first wicket, however Burbage suffered their usual mini collapse falling to 72 for 5 due to some tight bowling from Spye's left-arm spinners John Beal & Mark Hulse. However Dan Wootton then came in to join Pete Amor (21) taking Burbage to the bring of victory with a stand of 81, Dan mixing aggression with sensible strokeplay making 63. Skipper Jerry Kunkler and Ash Rosier then saw Burbage home with 2 overs to spare for a victory that leaves them 3rd in Division 1.

July 19th - Wilts Div 1: Swindon Civil Service v Burbage

Cricket match commentaryPosted by Roger Barker Fri, August 01, 2008 10:58:38
Swindon won the toss and elected to field. Unfortunately it was another bad day at the office for BERCC. Unusually Jit was first out caught off a full toss and breaking his favourite bat. We all thought he wasn't going to make it off the pitch it look so long!! Despite Peter Street batting well and holding the other end, BERCC lost regular wickets and fell to 71-5 after 28 overs. At this point 17 year old Dan Wootoon joined 16 year old Haydon Amor to show their geriatric team mates how it should be done. With good running and clean hitting the pair added 51 before both were out in quick succession, Wootton for 30, including 2 big sixes, and Amor for 24. The innings then subsided and BERCC were all out for 139 from 41 overs, plainly not enough.

Swindon stareted well putting on 91 for the first wicket with Smith making 43 and Beckett 40. However BERCC were bowling tightly and fielding well to apply some pressure. Bhanerjee, Cook and Barker all taking wickets, however there were just not enough runs to play with and Swindon eventually won in the 42nd over. Time to pull our socks up!!

July 12th - Wilts Div 1: Burbage v Cooper Avon Tyres

Cricket match commentaryPosted by Roger Barker Fri, August 01, 2008 10:50:36
What a strange match. On a day always threatening rain, BERCC won the toss and put Cooper Avon in to bat. Mark Wiltshire & Simon Bailey made a quick start putting on 39 in 8 overs before Wiltshire was run out by Roger Barker trying to sneek a third run. Bailey kept going through the innings being not out 94 at the close with Cooper Avon finishing on 218 for 5. Nic Cook taking 3-45, Cameron Hutchinson 1-30 and Barker adding a second run out .

The rains had come through the tea interval but had eased enough to start. BERCC batted very slowly and crucially lost 4 wickets reachin 28 after 16 overs. Then the heavan opened and the pitch was underwater. With BERCC in such a week position, Cooper Avon were keen to play and despite the pitch clealy being unplayable the umpires allowed the match to continue.

Bowlers couldn't stand up, batsmen couldn't run but Burbage had a revised target of 156 from 32 overs. Roger Barker (34) and Dan Wootton (14) had a go, but the conditions were awful and BERCC were eventually all out for 92. However, at least BERCC showed their sporting nature as Cooper Avon were clearly the better side on the day and deserved the points for the win.

June 28th – Wilts Div 1: Bath Civil Service v Burbage & ER

Cricket match commentaryPosted by Roger Barker Fri, August 01, 2008 10:39:14
Bath, who won the toss and decided to bat, got off to a flyer against Burbage & ER through an aggressive start bringing up 100 in the 17th over.

Ben Price provided the impetus with a hard hitting 84 before being bowled by Nic Cook, who ended with 3-60 from his 12 overs. Dan Nichols and Jon Down added 36 and 31 respectively before the innings closed with Bath CC making 242 for 9.

Burbage had a poor start, losing 2 wickets with only 8 on the board. Jit Bhanerjee continued his excellent form putting on 107 with Roger Barker in 19 overs before Barker was caught for 49. George Flippence then joined Bhanerjee making 20 in a stand of 60 in 10 overs before being unluckily run out backing up with a deflection from the bowler's boot. Bhanerjee was bowled soon after for 106, his third successive century, leaving it to Dan Wootton (24*) to steer Burbage home with good support from a whippet like Jerry Kunkler and Ash Rosier. Burbage winning by 3 wickets with 7 balls to spare.

June 14th – Wilts Div 1: Calne v Burbage & ER

Cricket match commentaryPosted by Roger Barker Fri, August 01, 2008 10:38:19

Calne remain unbeaten in Division One of the Wiltshire League after beating Burbage by 24 runs at the recreation ground. Burbage won the toss and put Calne in to bat. The innings started well with Tom Knight and Luke Edwards putting on 78 before Knight was bowled by Ash Rosier for 39. This wicket may have been regretted by Ash as it brought the in form Moss to the crease who hit 20 from one over before being yorked leg stump by the first ball he faced from Roger Barker.

Edwards continued to anchor the Calne innings and was out for a fine 78. Calne finished on 231 which looked a competitive total, the first time they had been all out this season. Rosier finished with 4-78 and Barker 3-48.

In reply Burbage were too relient on Jit Bhanerjee, who hit a second successive century before being 6th out for 104. Burbage clung on to fight for maximum batting points with the tail wagging through Jerry Kunkler (21, Ash Rosier (17) and Nic Cook (14).

For Calne Peter Knight, finished with 2-39 from 12 overs, Chris Downham 3-44 and Holcombe 2-37.

June 7th – Wilts Div 1: Burbage & ER v Avebury

Cricket match commentaryPosted by Roger Barker Fri, August 01, 2008 10:29:26
Avebury won the toss and elected to bat, they got off to a flying start with Dom Fry and Blake taking advantage of some loose bowling from Burbage. After Blake was run out Alex Millward joined Fry and make a quickfire 38, this was followed by an aggressive 48 from Greg Dix. Fry completed his century after approx 40 0vers ending with an cultured 113 not out. Avebury enjoyed their tea far more than Burbage finishing on 259 for 4 from their 45 overs.

Burbage started poorly with a run out in the third over. Jit Bhanerjee and Paul Lavis then consolidated well putting on 125 before Lavis (26) was LBW in the 28th over. Roger Barker then joined Bhanerjee putting together an aggressive partnership of 89 in 8 overs before Bhanerjee was caught on the boundary for 116 including 5 sixes. Barker and Haydon Amor then maintained the momentum putting on 36 runs in 5 overs befor Amor (17) was well caught at mid off. Barker then clubbed a 4 and a six of successive balls to end the match in the 42nd over, finishing on 68 not out in quick time, Burbage winning by 5 wickets with 3 overs to spare.

So Burbage are maintaining their excellent start to the season with 5 wins out of six, they are away to table topping Calne next.

May 31st – Wilts Div 1: Burbage & ER v Box

Cricket match commentaryPosted by Roger Barker Fri, August 01, 2008 10:27:55
BERCC won the toss and put Box in to bat. The rain in the week had caused the wicket to be very damp and winning the toss was always going to be crucial to the outcome of the game.

However, Box started brightly against the bowling of Cook and Hutchinson as openers Neil Pettit and Phil Oliver put on 44 for the first wicket before the introduction of spinner Jit Bhanerjee. He managed to bowl Pettit for 15 in his first over and never looked back. In his 12 overs conceded only nine runs and he picked up four wickets along the way.

Other wicket takers for Burbage were Nick Cook, who came back in his second spell to take three for 33, accounting for Trotman (24), Styles (12) and Dancey (0). Roger Barker trapped Marcus Bray for a duck and Ash Rosier finished with two wickets, clean bowling Rich Bryant for a duck and last man and top scorer Phil Oliver for 31 to leave Box 122 all out.

In reply Box had a cracking start, with Dancey clean bowling Peter Street for a duck in his first over and Crawford clean bowled Bhanerjee for 10 to leave Burbage on 16 for two. But Paul Lavis (21) and Pete Amor (39) put on a slow but effective partnership of 57 to put the home side back on track.

Box took wickets at regular intervals from there on in, but with such a small target to defend Burbage always looked like they would reach their goal before wickets ran out. Neil Pettit (two for 21) accounted for Pete Amor and Haydon Amor (6) while Trotman (one for 26) forced a simple catch from Kunckler in the deep to Dancey.
